Beginner Crochet Beanie

This is the perfect class to follow our Learner’s Permit to Crochet class. This is a basic, top-down, double crochet beanie that you can customize with your favorite colors. Please come on in to the Shoppe and choose a few colors of Cascade 128 Superwash. If you want the added challenge of making a striped hat, please pick 3 colors. If you choose to make a solid-colored hat, you’ll need 2 colors: 1 color for the body of the hat and 1 color for a contrasting brim. (You’ll likely have leftover yarn to make another hat too!) The Chunky (Striped) Beanie pattern has a child’s size and several adult sizes to choose from.

Amanda will teach the magic circle, increasing stitches to create a flat circle, crocheting in joined rounds (with changing colors), basic hat sizing, front loop/back loop crochet stitches and adding ribbing.

Supplies:

  • Cascade 128 Superwash (in 2 or 3 colors)

  • 5.0mm/H hook hook    AND

  • 6.0mm/J hook

  • tape measure

  • tapestry needle

  • scissors

Homework: Measure the head circumference (around where the brim of a beanie will fall) of the person you are going to make this for and bring that info to class.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: This is not a learn to crochet class: Students must know how to chain, slip stitch and double crochet.
Materials Included: Materials sold separately and must be purchased from Lambshoppe
Instructor: Amanda
Instructor Bio: Amanda is our newest crochet (and yarn) enthusiast at Lambshoppe. She has been knitting since 2005 and taught herself how to crochet (with a short lesson from her mom) in 2012. Amanda has been focused more on crochet rather than knitting lately and loves teaching beginners in the Learner's Permit class and anyone who drops into LambShoppe for crochet help. Amanda moved to Denver in 2007 and has worked as a schoolteacher as well as a ski instructor here in Colorado. Amanda loves to exercise in Wash Park and spend time with her kitty Oasis, dogs Onyx and Dusty, and her husband Bret. Amanda's niece Fiona is the newest target for knit, and especially crochet, projects right now.
