Lacy Summer Top - IN PROGRESS

This class is a guided “recipe” for knitting a seamless lace top.

We will learn:

  • Planning and designing your top!

  • Making and blocking a gauge swatch in pattern

  • Swatching is critical for this pattern/class.

  • Using a gauge swatch to determine number of cast on stitches to achieve desired size

  • One Step Provisional cast on (Purl SoHo has a great video on YouTube). You may use another preferred provisional cast on if desired

  • Basic knitted lace patterns (no charts) - we will incorporate several into our top

  • Using life lines (always important when knitting lace)

  • Optional: iCord edge, iCord bind off, picot bind off

  • Printed pattern and a pencil - Sierra's Lacy Tunic, a free pattern on Ravelry

  • We will select yarn during the first class (500-1000 yards, depending on size and desired length). I highly recommend getting an extra skein of yarn, or err on the side of more as we need yarn for swatching.

  • Suggested yarn: You may choose any yarn; a fingering or DK/worsted weight cotton or cotton blend is recommended for this summery top. Consider Laines du Nord Baby Soft, Rowan Cotton Revive, Juniper Moon Zooey or Zooey Stripes (fingering), or Berroco Pima 100 or Modern Cotton, Ella Rae Pretty in Pima, Plymouth Pima Rino (DK/Worsted)

  • Needle appropriate for desired yarn - recommend a 32 inch circular needle. You may need to try a few needle sizes to achieve your desired fabric. Fingering weight will likely require a 3.5 (US4), 3.75 (US 5), or 4mm (US 6). DK weight will likely require 4mm (US 6), 4.5 (US 7), or 5mm (US 8). Recommend bringing a selection of needles to class or an interchangeable set (if you have them). If you need to purchase needles, wait until class.

  • A crochet hook matching (or close to) your needle size for the provisional cast on

  • 2-4 yds smooth scrap yarn, fingering or DK.

  • Lifeline - you can use a thin mercerized cotton, a smooth yarn (thinner than your project yarn), or unwaxed dental floss

  • Removable stitch markers

  • Tapestry needle for inserting lifeline and weaving in ends

  • Optional: a row counter

Homework: None prior to start of class. There will be knitting to do after each class!
