Year of Gnomes - January Edition

Join us in kicking off the second Year of Gnomes, in which you knit a gnome a month.  You can participate in as many, or as few, months as you choose.  The only requirement is that you start and finish a gnome in a given month.  Last time was great fun, with the only downside being that I now need a bigger space for my gnome family.

What you learn depends on the gnome you choose.  I will cover almost anything needed: i-cord, knitting in the round on a small number of stitches, sewing the gnome together, picking up stitches, increasing, decreasing, cables, stripes, tassels, even duplicate stitch to embellish your gnome of choice.  I’ll cover just about anything other than colorwork, which is needed for some of the designs.

 Please review class policies

Pattern(s): Any gnome from Sarah Schira.  I especially recommend anything from the book  The Gnomes of Grimblewood.  If you are new to gnomes, or just in the mood for something fast and simple, Never Not Gnoming and Gno Fun Like Gnome Fun are a great place to start.  Her patterns can be found here: https://www.ravelry.com/bundles/gnomes-111
You can also purchase Sarah Schira's book "Gnomes of Grimblewood" at Lamb Shoppe or online Here

Supplies:
Your chosen gnome pattern.

Yarn: most patterns are written for fingering weight yarn, but can be worked in any yarn you like. The exact amount of yarn you need and the size of your gnome will be determined by the yarn weight you choose.  A few options: fingering - Leading Men Fiber Arts minis, DK: Rowan Felted Tweed, Theodora’s Pearls minis, Worsted:  Woolstok minis

Needles needed to make a firm fabric, stitch markers, tapestry needle.  If you choose a gnome with cables, and like to use a cable needle, bring that too.

You will also need stuffing (poly-fil is most common, but yarn scraps and wool roving are also options.)  If you would like your gnome to stand up, you’ll need some weighted stuffing.  I use poly pellets, but you can also use dried beans, rocks, anything heavy.  I used hazelnuts for my last gnome.

Homework: Choose your gnome, have all your materials, and have the first color yarn you’ll be using wound up.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Skill Details: For the adventurous beginner and intermediate knitter. All gnomes require knitting in the round, which participants should be familiar with, in whatever method they choose (magic loop, DPN, 2 circulars) Some gnomes require colorwork, which will not be covered in class.
